The Paths of Kings (2 Chronicles 13-16)

pastor0573

In 2 Chronicles 13, we see a clash between two kings of Israel: Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah, the king of Judah, leads his army against Jeroboam, the king of Israel. Abijah gives a powerful speech, reminding the Israelites that they have forsaken the Lord and that Judah remains faithful. Despite being outnumbered, Judah emerges victorious, thanks to their trust in God.

Moving on to 2 Chronicles 14, we find Asa, the son of Abijah, becoming the king of Judah. Asa takes a righteous path and removes idolatry from the land. He strengthens the kingdom, builds fortified cities, and enjoys peace in the early years of his reign. Asa also encourages the people to seek the Lord and follow His commandments.

In 2 Chronicles 15, a prophet named Azariah confronts Asa and the people of Judah, urging them to return to God wholeheartedly. Asa heeds the prophet's words and removes idols even from his own household. The people of Judah enter into a covenant to seek the Lord with all their hearts, and they experience a time of peace.

Finally, in 2 Chronicles 16, we witness a shift in Asa's behavior. When Baasha, the king of Israel, threatens Judah, Asa seeks help from the king of Aram instead of relying on God as he did before. Asa also mistreats the prophet Hanani for delivering a rebuke from the Lord. Asa's later years are marked by disease and a lack of seeking God's help.

Now, let's move on to three points of application we can draw from this passage:

  • Trust in God: The story of Abijah and Asa emphasizes the importance of trusting in God rather than relying on our own strength or seeking help from worldly sources. Despite being outnumbered, Abijah's faith in God led to his victory. Asa also experienced great success when he sought the Lord, but his later downfall came when he relied on human alliances. We should remember to trust in God's guidance and provision in all situations.

  • Repentance and Renewal: Asa's initial reign is characterized by a dedication to removing idolatry and urging the people to seek the Lord. This highlights the significance of repentance and turning away from sinful practices. Just as Asa led the people in purging the land of idols, we should also examine our lives, identify areas of sin, and make a conscious effort to turn away from them. True renewal and blessings come when we align ourselves with God's will.

  • Honoring God's Messengers: The encounter between Asa and the prophet Hanani sheds light on the importance of respecting and heeding God's messengers. Asa initially listens to Azariah's prophetic warning and takes action. However, when confronted by Hanani's rebuke, Asa responds with anger and mistreatment. We should remember to have humility and openness to receive correction and guidance from those who speak God's truth into our lives.

So, there you have it! Trusting in God, embracing repentance and renewal, and honoring God's messengers are some valuable takeaways from 2 Chronicles 13-16.
